Error: 'A file error has occurred whilst printing' in Dimensions v3

What to do if you see a file error when generating a document and selecting File as the output option in Dimensions v3.

You can see this error when generating a document in a hosted instance of Dimensions v3 — for example, a Sales order delivery note — and selecting File as the output option.

📌Note: When you select File as the output option, Dimensions creates a text (.txt) file and writes it to the folder specified in the Reports to file Location setting of the User Record.

Why this happens

The error occurs because the user does not have permission to write to the folder path specified in the Reports to file Location setting of their User Record.

It is common for Dimensions v3 users to have this location set to \\CLIENT\C$\. This is a Citrix notation that points to the root folder of the user's local C: drive, which is a location they may not have write permission to.

Resolve the error

To resolve this, review the Reports to file Location setting for the affected users and update the path to a location they have write permission to — for example, their Documents folder.

⚠️Important: You will need the required permission to update User Records to complete the steps below.

  1. Click System, then click User Records.

  2. Select the affected user from the list.

  3. Click Options, then click Edit.

  4. Click Reports to file Location.

  5. Change \\CLIENT\C$\ to \\CLIENT\C$\Users\{user}\Documents\, where {user} is the user's local Windows username.

  6. Click Save.

🤓Tip: If you are unsure of the user's local Windows username, ask the user to check by opening a Command Prompt and typing whoami.
