Error - 'SMTP operation timed out' when sending emails

This error means Dimensions cannot contact your email server. The SMTP server settings in Dimensions may be incorrect. Check the settings as follows:

  1. Click System > Options > System Control Options (ribbon menu) or System Control > Options > System Options (classic/module menu).

  2. Click the System Format tab.

  3. Click the blue arrow to the left of System Email Defaults.

  4. Click SMTP servers.

  5. Note the email server configured and close the window.

  6. Click SMTP users and review the authentication details. There are two methods:

  7. If Use Default Credentials is enabled, authentication uses the Windows account of the person currently logged in.

  8. If a username and password are set, authentication uses the configured account.

  9. Note all these settings.

  10. Confirm all settings are correct with your IT team.

  11. If a username and password are configured, also follow these steps:

  12. In Dimensions, click System, then Users. Click the user who is seeing the error and click Email in the toolbar.

  13. Remove the Email and Email name from the User Email Details and click Save.

  14. These details may be conflicting with the SMTP Server and SMTP User settings.

Also check the Timeout value on the SMTP server. If it is set too high, Dimensions may ignore it and use a shorter default timeout instead. To check:

  1. Click System > Options > System Control Options (ribbon menu) or System Control > Options > System Options (classic/module menu).

  2. Click the System Format tab.

  3. Click the blue arrow to the left of System Email Defaults.

  4. Click SMTP servers (the computer icon in the top left of the new window).

  5. The Timeout in ms column is shown. This should be set to approximately 60000.

If you have confirmed all settings with your IT team and the issue persists, contact support. See Get support in Dimensions.
