Route Records

Route

A Route is a collection of stages that a works order needs to go through before it can be completed.

You may have a number of alternative routes that a works order could travel along, each of which may have different stages representing different processes along the way.

One of the Route Records can be flagged as Default. This route will then be automatically assigned to a new assembly stock record.

A default route can be set in the Bill Of Material settings. The default route can be changed when the works order is created.

Each works order must be assigned to a single route.

Stage

A Stage is an individual element of a route that represents an activity, milestone or holding area. The system allows different quantities of the works order to be held at different stages along the route.

For example, you build oil drums and the route this works order takes has the following stages:

1) guillotine; 2) forming; 3) welding; 4) painting; 5) inspection; 6) packing.

You are building a works order for 60 drums, however 5 have failed inspection and have been returned for repainting.

The status of your works order stages is now:

1) guillotine – 0 items; 2) forming – 0 items; 3) welding – 0 items; 4) painting – 5 items; 5) inspection – 0 items; 6) packing – 55 items.

Creating a Route record

A Route record consists of a unique code, a description and a set of processing stages that will take place along the route.

Select Route Records to open the Route Records window.

The Route Records window has the same functionality as other record windows within Dimensions.

The tool bar enables you to:

Move through existing records using the Next and Previous buttons.

Insert, Edit, Duplicate and Delete records.

View information about the record and transactions relating to the record.

The lookup function, alongside the code field, will pop-up a list of existing Route records.

To create a record:

  • Press Insert.

  • Enter a unique alpha-numeric code.

  • Enter a description to help you to quickly identify the route.

  • Create a list of stages:

Each stage record consists of a single line of text that describes the processing that is to take place.

You may not repeat a stage within a route without identifying it with a different name.

For example: the painting process for an item might require a drying stage. If the paint process is a two stage event the stages should be labelled Paint 1; Drying 1; Paint 2; Drying 2.

For a new Route record, tabbing from the Description field will position the prompt in the first text field on the stages tab ready for entry.

You must enter at least one stage to create the route record.

Stages can be re-ordered using the up and down arrow buttons on the tab.

  • The Notes tab and the Custom tab allow the entry of notes and additional User Keys in the same manner as other Dimensions records.

  • Press OK to save the record.

  • To view or attach a Document to the record click Document function on the Window Toolbar.

Workflow Forms

Any Workflow Forms on the Record Window are displayed in a list pane at the bottom of the record window. If no WFF is attached to the record, the pane is not visible.

To edit a record:

Stages can be added, removed and re-ordered.

  • Click the Edit button to activate the re-order and delete buttons on the Stages tab.

  • To enter a new stage, click on the last stage in the list and press the <tab> key to move to a new line.

  • Type in the text that will identify this stage.

  • Use the up and down arrow buttons to move the new stage to it's correct position in the process.

To remove a stage from the list, click on the stage to be removed and press Delete.

To re-order the list, click on the stage to be moved and use the up and down arrow buttons to move the stage to it's correct position in the process.
