The main reason for this occurring is because when you year end, there is a box that appear stating 'Would you like to advance your ledger defaults a year'. If you click no,they stay at the same year.
This is easy to correct, and will not have done any damage to your data. Please just follow the steps below:
Navigate to System Tab
Click Options
Click System Control
Click on Ledger Defaults
Change the Current Financial Year Started to a year ahead.
Click Save
You defaults will now have advanced a year, and we be back in alignment with your Ledgers.
